The short answer
Alexandrite, diode and Nd:YAG systems interact differently with pigment and tissue depth. Alexandrite is strongly absorbed by melanin, Nd:YAG is often selected when epidermal pigment requires greater caution, and diode systems vary widely. Device label alone does not determine safety or efficacy.
Why the question needs assessment
Cooling, spot size, pulse duration, fluence, repetition, coverage and endpoint recognition can matter as much as the broad wavelength category.
Skin tone, recent sun, hair colour and calibre, body area, hormonal factors, medication and previous reactions determine device parameters and session spacing.

What changes the plan
Skin phototype, recent sun, hair thickness and colour, area, history of pigment change and the operator’s familiarity with the platform guide selection.
- Diagnosis and treatment goal
- Medical history and previous procedures
- Skin tone or tissue characteristics
- Recovery and follow-up
Results, timing and follow-up
A course is expected because hairs cycle through different growth phases. Maintenance varies by area and biology; complete permanent removal should not be promised.
The plan should define when review is useful, what a realistic response looks like and when to change course instead of repeating the same session automatically.
Safety and when to seek review
Burns, blistering and pigment change are possible. Accurate coverage, cooling, conservative parameter selection and clear aftercare reduce—but do not eliminate—risk.
This guide is educational and cannot confirm an individual’s suitability. Severe or sudden symptoms need direct medical contact or an appropriate emergency service.
Frequently asked questions
01Can the plan be decided from photos?
Photos can help explain a concern, but the final plan needs an appropriate history and examination.
02Can a result be guaranteed?
No. Expected outcomes, risks and alternatives can be explained, but individual response varies.
03What is the best first step?
Begin with a consultation that defines the diagnosis, goal and alternatives rather than booking from a treatment name alone.
